Bored

I can’t say anything interesting has happened in the past week. It’s been a terrifically boring week. Basically I’ve lost interest in Japanese. I can’t stand studying anymore and so I’ve taken a very long break. I didn’t have much school this week. There were a few holidays and then I took a sick day on Thursday so I didn’t have very much interaction with people. Mostly I watched movies and read the news. I’ve accomplished oh-so-little this week it surprises me.

Instead, I’ve been doing lots of reading of novels and news. I also got into Time magazine’s free Podcasts online. Those are fun. The move date to my next family has been finalized. I’m changing houses on the 31st, yet I still have no paperwork on them. Obviously there’s some communication going on if a date has been nailed down, but no info on the new hosts. It sure would be nice to have some contact with them before I move. Thanks CIEE. You guys are a big help. Have I mentioned recently that CIEE is an awful company? On my list of things to do is email my local coordinator and ask, “Who is my next family?” But I’m fairly certain that I’ll just be called a whiney, selfish, American brat. It’s happened before.

There is excitement in the air though. The new school year starts soon. Japan’s school year goes from April to March so the turnover occurs after spring break. Spring break is just one week away and I’m looking forward to that very much. I have several trips planned, with Japanese friends, American friends, my host family, and then I move houses. I’m hoping that changing families will bring put the joy back into learning Japanese.

Today was a bit more exciting than the recent past. Instead of sitting at home on the internet, I was out of the house by seven for track practice. But since I was sick on Thursday and partway into Friday, my running shoes were left locked in the track room. Today we had practice outside of school grounds because the soccer team had a game where we usually practice. So I had the pleasure of running in my Chuck Taylors. Those things give nasty blisters around mile four or so. Then I had aikido, which is still fun but rather frustrating sometimes. I’m still having trouble with the fundamentals. Sensei says I’m leading with my hands when I should be leading with my body. It all makes sense and I understand when he shows me but then I can’t seem to apply it. Oh well.

Oh, and I read that the Sears Tower is becoming Willis Tower. How long will it take for that name to stick?

I refuse to call the Sears Tower by any other name. It is the Sears Tower and that is that. I hope you'll hear back soon about your new host family. I also hope that they will be a nice bunch. Any chance you could call them? Well I hope it turns out fine. Good luck!

What, you gotta keep at that Japanese. You are going to be my tour guide in the future.

But I agree with you. The change in host family will probably reignite your drive seeing as you have to find someway to accommodate them to your concept of Japan.

I hope you don't end up with crazy host parents who lock you out of the house. That does seem to be CIEE's M.O.

I have some empathy for you and your fantastically boring week. This week was Spring Break, and I was sick for the majority of it. I probably slept 11 hours a day. It wasn't quite a party in Cancun, but at least I'm well rested.
